FBCMUD 23 Resident Update: Ammonia-like Odor in the Air

Sep 25, 2021

Residents of Fort Bend County Municipal Utility District No. 23 (FBCMUD 23) may have noticed a stronger-than-usual ammonia-like odor around the wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) the last few days. The Board of Directors for FBCMUD 23 and the District Operator, Municipal District Services (MDS), are aware of the situation and wanted to inform residents as to the cause.

The situation is due to ongoing repairs on a portion of the WWTP. MDS is continuously monitoring the situation, and the repairs to the WWTP should take about another 28-30 days, weather permitting. The Board asks for residents' patience as the matter gets resolved.

Is the odor dangerous?

No. There is currently no danger due to the smell, and there are not dangerous levels in the air. This is just an inconvenience and an expected result of the situation at the WWTP.

Is the sewer system backing up?

No. This situation is localized to the WWTP and is not indicative of problems in the sanitary sewer lines.

Can this get into the water system, or in our home?

No. This situation is localized to the WWTP, which is after water has left residences and businesses and is being processed for departure from the District.

If you have any further questions regarding this situation or any other District projects, please do not hesitate to reach out to the District via the 'Contact Us' page on the District website.
